Personality Development through Vastushastra

Vastushastra has a strong influence on every aspect of human life.  The practical events and experiences in an individual’s life bear ample testimony to this fact. In this chapter, we will discuss about the development of various qualities which enhance the personality of an individual and the impact of Vastushastra in molding the human personality.

Vastushastra is a science that synchronizes eight directions with the five elements.  Northeast region belongs to water element.  It signifies three important aspects viz. entrance, place for water and the abode of God.  In other words, the entrance or the living room, the placement of water and the abode of God in this direction is essential.  Any vastu incorporating the above features is considered ideal and progressive. Such a vastu contributes to increased flow of wealth, good health, academic progress of children and spiritual development of elderly people.  In short, such a vastu confers bountiful wealth, health and academic progress.  Success and fame inspires a person to work with renewed vigour and scale greater heights.  Many persons make sincere attempts and efforts.  But success may elude them.  However, the northeast direction can make a significant contribution to a person’s success.

Southeast or Agneya direction is the place of fire element.  Fire signifies energy while energy connotes motion or progress.  Properly installed fire element in a vastu helps in providing momentum to the success conferred by the northeast direction thereby ensuring integrated success.  All the obstacles are removed and the work proceeds smoothly.  Such a state of affairs gives a sense of real happiness to an individual in vocational life.  If the above aspect is blended with leadership qualities, decision making abilities and harmonious relations a person will experience the ultimate sense of joy.

Southwest is the region of earth element.  It is advisable to have more weight and also the master bedroom of the head of the family in this direction.  As per the principle of moment of inertia, higher the weight, greater is the force required for moving an object.  In other words, a heavy object has an increased level of stability.    Due to the earth element (heaviness), a master bedroom in the southwest direction provides stability and enhances the self confidence of the head of the family.  A person with adequate level of self confidence will be in a position to take quick and firm decisions.  During times of crisis in business or in family, this quality helps an individual to take decisions with composure and find a successful way out of the situation.  In short, southwest provides confidence, stability and timely decision making abilities.  This ultimately develops poise and leadership qualities.

The northwest or vayavya direction is the place of wind element.  The wind element helps in maintaining a pleasant environment, spread of fragrance and toning  up of  the communication.  Wind is always on the move and never static. The northwest direction helps in maintaining mutual harmony and enhancing inter personal relationships.  This naturally results in healthy atmosphere, increased efficiency, productivity and success.

Finally, the centre region of the vastu is the place of sky element.  The sky is all pervading and signifies vastness.  It is the binding force which holds all the other elements together.  Water flowing at shallow levels produces more noise than water at great depth.  Therefore, if the sky element in a vastu is not disturbed it provides intensity, perfection and maturity.

From the above discussion, it can be summed up that northeast confers progress and success.  Southeast gives acceleration to progress, southwest develops confidence, stability   and decision making qualities.  Northwest improves harmony, co-ordination and communication skills while the centre (sky element) offers maturity and depth.  It is, therefore, apparent that adherence to vastu principles enhances personality development and assures integrated progress.

Shoe Rack as per Vastushastra

While planning the interior of the house, it is necessary to have a proper place for the Shoe rack.

• Shoe rack can be kept at any location except North to East.
• Priority should be given to keep this rack in West/North West.
• A difficulty arises when the entrance of the house is in the North to East, as it is customary to place the Shoe rack near the entrance. Locating the same outside the entrance will be ideal,  if the security aspects of the house permits such an arrangement.
• It is not practical to keep the Shoe rack in North West if the entrance of the house is from the North East. Under such circumstances, there is no other alternative and the rack is to be kept near the entrance but in the North West direction.
• If a showcase has been planned in North East near the entrance, the Shoe rack can be placed in the same.
• If the entrance of the house is in North East, it is essential to plan the abode of God in the North East direction. At the same time, the shoe rack has also to be placed near the entrance.  Under such circumstances, it is necessary to retain the sanctity of the prayer shrine by maintaining a suitable gap between the two.

Vastushastra of Factory

The following important factors have to be taken into consideration while planning an industrial unit :

• The plot, which is selected for setting up an industrial unit, should be square or rectangular.  It should not be of an irregular shape.
• If possible, the plot should have a slope towards north to east and the south to west portion should be elevated.
• The main building of the factory should be constructed from south to west. There should be more open space from east to north.
• The compound wall should be taller and thicker in south and west.  It should be thinner and lesser in height between east to north.
• Storage of underground water should be in the northeast direction.
• Main entrance, open space, parking for two wheelers, greenery or garden and an abode of God (if necessary) should be planned in east to north direction.
• The tallest and biggest building should be in southwest (south-west) while the smallest building should be in northeast.
• The building of the factory should be preferably square or rectangular.  The doors should be facing each other in all the four directions or the main gate should be through one of the five auspicious entrances.
• The centre of the plot or the main building should be vacant.  There should not be any trench or water in the centre portion.
• Electrical transformer, boiler, generator, electric sub-station or any furnace wherein heating process is involved or high temperature is generated,  such devices should be housed in southeast (south to east).
• The quarters for security and other personnel should be in southeast direction.
• Canteen, welding, boiling, research & development laboratory, computer server room, control panel etc. is required to be placed in southeast.
• Heavy machinery, raw materials, the Head of the Production Department, overhead tank, staircase should be in south and southeast direction.
• Heavy articles, toilet, administrative building, raw materials etc. should be designed in west region.
• Packaging, materials ready for sale, promotional literature, dispatch section, marketing department, the exit gate for  the dispatch of finished goods and the parking for these vehicles should be in northwest (north-west) direction.
• Proper  cleanliness should be maintained in the factory.
• Compressor, gas tank, waste bin or scrap materials should be kept in northwest               direction.
• In very big industries (cement, automobiles, steel or sugar etc.)  wherein the number of heavy vehicles used for transporting materials is on a large scale, it will be better if the parking for huge trucks or trailers is made in the southwest direction.
• In the case of textile industry, it is necessary for providing trenches and water storage at many places for dyeing.  In such cases, this arrangement should be made only in northeast.
• In case of industrial units, the manufacturing activities may pertain to chemicals, engineering, electronics and numerous other items.  The manufacturing process of each of these products is different.  Therefore, as per the study of production cycle, we can plan the unit from the point of view of Vastu.

If an industrial unit is planned as per Vastushastra, the open space and the water element in the northeast contributes to progress and harmony while the fire element in the southeast gives an impetus to the progress.  The heaviness in the southwest provides stability to the business and ensures smooth financial position.  The wind element in the northwest contributes to harmony in inter personal relationships while the vacant space in the core centre (brahmatatva) contributes to total integration and pleasant atmosphere.  In essence, these factors contribute to progress, eminence, prosperity and harmony in an industrial unit.

However, it is probable, that an existing industrial unit may not comply with all the principles of Vastushastra or technical constraints may not permit the same.  In such cases, it is possible to neutralise the vastu defects through remedial measures without recourse to any demolition.  By installing certain powerful remedial devices we can be successful in removing the vastu deficiencies.  One should choose an experienced vastu consultant for this purpose.
